How to Start a Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobes have gained popularity for their ease of use and versatility. Creating a capsule doesn’t mean you have to wear the same things every day (unless you want to!). Also contrary to popular belief, you can have colors and patterns in your capsule wardrobe.

But what is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a seasonal wardrobe with the aim to reduce the total amount of clothes in your rotation. To help achieve this aim, items should work well with each other in layers and as pieces. There is no set limit to how many items you have in your capsule wardrobe, but generally speaking it’s best to aim under 40.  However, if you are not one for “rules,” don’t worry so much about the number, just ensure that you build your wardrobe around core essentials that are versatile, long-lasting pieces that you love.

This list is by no means exhaustive, and you’ll note that we tried not to include too many specific brands. At the end of the day, a capsule wardrobe should reflect your signature style with pieces you’ve personally selected. Try to work with what you already have and then strategically bring in new items.

The Basics

Tops

  1. Layering shirts

Dedicated layering shirts (short and long-sleeved) serve as a great base under sweaters, jackets or worn alone. Organic Basics is a great place to start.

  2. Fitted Sweater

A fitted and thinner sweater for layering works well when it’s freezing outside but hot in the office. Try a ribbed turtleneck or a bright color that will pop when you layer under a chunky sweater.

  3. Chunky sweater

This one is a no-brainer, but there are a ton of styles to choose from. From bold colored stripes, Nordic inspired designs, neutral beiges and grays, or even off-the-shoulder, you can find a sweater for any style preference. We love the made-to-order 100% merino wool sweaters from Club Knit. Shop secondhand to find quality sweaters at a lower price point.

  4. Layering jacket

For office workers this sort of jacket might mean a blazer or cardigan, and for others this could be a denim or faux leather jacket (vintage or recycled leather too!).

  5. Dress

Having at least one dress is a good idea for special occasions, but dresses can act as comfortable daily wear as well. Try layering your chunky sweater over any dress, or for extra cold days, a knit sweater dress with a belt.

  1. Leggings

Either worn on their own or layered under dresses and long t-shirts, leggings are a versatile item you’ll want to have in your winter wardrobe. Pact Apparel has some great options or try a pair of faux leather leggings for an edgier touch

  2. Jeans

Jeans are incredibly versatile and can help you express your signature style. Anything from classics like a dark-wash straight and skinny leg are good for work, while more modern designs like wide-leg and bell bottoms in all colors are fun and fashionable options. Remember to look for vintage or sustainable denim!

  3. Pants

A pair of black pants is always good to have on hand, especially if you work in an office. Experiment with styles to determine what has the most versatility for you, like a classic slim pant, a paper bag waist or a wide-leg option.

  4. Skirt

Skirts of all lengths work for winter, as long as you’re layering appropriately. Layer your chunky sweater over a midi skirt or tuck your fitted sweater into a mini skirt with extra-warm leggings.

Remember, this is just the starting point of your capsule wardrobe. We’ve purposefully left this vague so you’re free to explore your own style and build a capsule wardrobe that you’ll truly enjoy wearing.
