12 Sustainable Swimwear Brands to Know

The heat of the summer is here and if you haven’t already found your summer suit, now is the time. Check out some of our sustainable options below, with a variety of styles and price points.

When it comes to fabrics, typically the best sustainable fabrics are organic or fully biodegradable, such as cotton, linen, and hemp. However, these fabrics aren’t as appropriate when it comes to swimwear, as it needs to be strong and durable enough to hold its shape when wet, be chlorine resistant, and elastic.

For this reason, sustainable swimwear brands commonly use recycled fibers and other alternatives from disposable plastic water bottles, natural rubber, and abandoned fishing nets to make the yarn that goes into these swimwear pieces. These materials are not a perfect solution: they’re not biodegradable and they also release microfibers when washed. However, because many of the ideal sustainable fabrics are not usable in this case, these recycled synthetic fibers are the next best thing.

Sustainable swimwear features many trade-offs as brands balance swimsuit durability, which ultimately increases a piece’s longevity and sustainability, with ethical production and eco-friendly materials. You can do your part by choosing your suit wisely and aiming to wear it for a long time.

Hackwith Design House Swim: This swim line creates long-lasting pieces by using quality fabrics that are locally sourced and recycled as much as possible.
